October is the season for scary stories – but when it comes to medical waste, some of the risks

worth watching aren’t nearly as obvious.

Even with a strong waste management program in place, the day-to-day details matter.  How waste is segregated, when containers are replaced, where they’re stored and whether employees understand the different waste streams all play a role in keeping your workplace safe and your program running smoothly.

Watch the fill line.

Overfilled sharps containers increase the risk of needlesticks and employee exposure.  Replace containers before they become overfilled, and make sure they’re located where staff can dispose of sharps safely and conveniently.

Keep waste streams separate.
Sharps, regulated medical waste, pathological waste and pharmaceutical waste aren’t interchangeable.  Proper segregation helps ensure waste is handled appropriately – and can prevent more expensive waste streams from filling up unnecessarily.

Pay special attention to pharmaceuticals.
Not all pharmaceutical waste is handled the same way. Non-hazardous pharmaceuticals, hazardous pharmaceuticals and controlled substances can have different disposal requirements. When there’s uncertainty about where something belongs, ask before tossing it.

Don’t overlook the storage area.
Between pickups, containers should remain properly closed, labeled and stored in the appropriate location.  A quick look at your waste storage area from time to time can catch issues before they become problems.

Keep your team in the loop.
New employees, changing responsibilities and busy schedules can lead to knowledge gaps.  Periodic training and simple reminders help reinforce safe handling and proper segregation practices.

Medical waste shouldn’t be scary – and as a Keystone customer, you don’t have to manage it alone.
